ChatGPT gets read-only access to Epic patient records, but Epic won't comment — and three layers of AI now run on the same chart
On 1 September 2026 OpenAI announced that healthcare organisations can now connect the Epic electronic health record to their regulated ChatGPT for Healthcare environment. The integration — reserved for enterprise customers in a regulated workspace, under a BAA for HIPAA compliance (the contract that in the United States governs how a third-party vendor handles health data) — works strictly read-only: the system retrieves and summarises visit notes, lab results, medication lists and specialist documentation, without writing anything into the patient's record. Epic holds data on more than 325 million patients; at launch, however, the integration covers only a small group of partner organisations — among them Cedars-Sinai, Boston Children's Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering and UCSF — and only customers in a regulated workspace, not individual clinicians' accounts. The backdrop: according to figures reported by TechCrunch, users send the model roughly 300 million health-related queries every week.
Information is reached either by calling up the patient context inside the conversation or by embedding the module directly in Epic's interface, for uses such as pre-visit review or handover. UCSF Health is among the first partners in this rollout. Its president and chief executive, Suresh Gunasekaran, said: «As a pilot partner, we are exploring how the new EHR integration with ChatGPT for Healthcare can help clinical teams understand what has changed and what matters most in a complex chart», adding that «by bringing the relevant information together faster and more completely, the technology has the potential to reduce time spent synthesising data». A plugin was introduced at the same time to connect the system to nine official health sources, including ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed and PubMed. On performance, OpenAI states that 99.1% of responses were rated «safe» by physicians, out of a total that outlets put at between 4,300 and 4,363 assessments, covering 27 clinical use cases. What the reporting does not reveal is the test protocol, the composition of the rater panel, or the working definition adopted for «safe» — which is not the same as complete, up to date, or adequate for a given clinical decision.
On the IT architecture and hospital governance side, several points remain unclear. As the trade publication healthsystemcio.com notes, as of 1 September Epic had issued no public statement on the initiative, leaving it uncertain whether the link runs over standard third-party interfaces or a formal agreement between the two companies. For CIOs, the integration lands on top of two layers of artificial intelligence already sitting on the same chart — Epic's native summarisation and ambient documentation tools — raising licensing and workflow-validation questions. OpenAI repeats that the tool is not intended for diagnosis or treatment and that verification and clinical decisions remain the physician's responsibility. In the background sit two pending civil lawsuits in the United States, cited by TechCrunch and concerning health advice obtained from the chatbot: these are allegations not yet tested in court.
Letting a language model read a patient's history without granting it the right to sign anything is an understandable perimeter of corporate caution. The piece lives in the gap between what is announced and what is verified — read-only is a serious technical constraint, but the safety rate is self-reported by the vendor, Epic is silent, and two layers of AI are already running on the same screen.
