Intrinsic Core: Alphabet's new open-source kit for industrial robotics
On September 22, 2026, at ROSCon in Toronto, Intrinsic unveiled Intrinsic Core, an open-source package of ROS-compatible capabilities for building complex robotic applications. The Apache 2.0 license allows commercial use too, as confirmed by the official blog and the GitHub repository. The released components include Intrinsic Control, a hardware-agnostic real-time control framework; pose estimation based on NVIDIA FoundationPose; motion and grasp planning; simulation with Gazebo; camera calibration; and preconfigured Intrinsic‑ROS drivers for supported robots, grippers and 3D cameras.
The repository lists modules such as intrinsic_runtime, intrinsic_control, intrinsic_motion_planning, intrinsic_perception, intrinsic_inference, intrinsic_sdk, intrinsic_hardware and intrinsic_kinematics, all designed to run on Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04 and 26.04 LTS with the ROS 2 Lyrical Luth distribution. The reference solution for CNC machine tending, reported by SiliconANGLE, works with Universal Robots and FANUC hardware, while Unite.AI also mentions partners such as NVIDIA, ATI, Schunk, Robotiq and Basler. Left out of the open-source release: enterprise services, advanced AI models, the Intrinsic Flowstate platform and industrial-grade cloud services.
Intrinsic, founded in 2021 inside Alphabet and folded into Google in February 2026, stresses that the released components match the same capabilities and services used every day in real production deployments. Still, there are no independent benchmarks or documented third-party adoptions yet, and the repository is not officially supported by Google, which leaves long-term maintenance uncertain. Also, the figure that only 8% of US and European machine shops are automated comes from SiliconANGLE, not from Intrinsic, which only speaks of "a small fraction".
In short, Intrinsic Core brings the open-core model to industrial robotics: the building blocks are under Apache 2.0, while Flowstate, the advanced AI models and the cloud stay proprietary.
