Genesis Mission: $5 Billion to Supercharge Scientific Research with AI

In the official statement from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), director Michael Kratsios declared that "America's greatest scientific achievements have been born of national mobilizations paired with the construction of new institutions". With that, the U.S. administration launched the Genesis Mission, an initiative born of a November 2025 executive order to harness artificial intelligence for scientific research.

The mission is coordinated by the Department of Energy (DOE) as lead agency and brings together more than 15 federal agencies, including HHS/NIH, NASA, NSF, NIST and the departments of Transportation, the Interior, Veterans Affairs, Commerce and Agriculture. The program is built around five grand challenges: health (chronic diseases, pediatric cancers, drug discovery), energy and infrastructure, microelectronics and manufacturing, frontier research (quantum, new materials, autonomous labs, space data) and security (biological threat detection, nuclear attribution).

The DOE reported that, out of more than 5,000 applications received, 278 research projects were selected across all 50 states, calling it the largest response ever to a DOE funding opportunity. These figures come from DOE reporting rather than the main White House statement, and mark the largest funding call the agency has ever recorded. In parallel, Microsoft launched SPARK (Scientific Partnership Advancing Research & Knowledge) to provide cloud and AI credits in support of the mission. It's worth noting that the exact makeup of the more than $5 billion (new versus reallocated funds) was not detailed in the primary source, and the projects' scientific impact remains to be seen over time.
