Gemini in Google Classroom opens to every age group: on by default from 10 August

On 4 August 2026, through the official Google Workspace Updates blog, Google announced that Gemini in Google Classroom is being extended to students of every age, from K-12 schools to higher education. Until this announcement, according to the same post, student access to Gemini in Classroom had only been extended to higher education students aged 18 and over. Google states that "Access to the Gemini tab in Classroom is On by default for teachers and students of all ages". That default only applies, however, where the school domain administrator has already turned on Gemini in Classroom, the Gemini app and Gemini Notebook.

The rollout is gradual: from 10 August 2026 on the web and from 17 August 2026 on mobile, for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, as set out in the official Workspace Updates post. The independent outlet Chrome Unboxed reported the same dates and the same default activation on 6 August, confirming the announcement.

Students get starting suggestions grounded in their course materials, flashcard generation, practice quizzes and study guides, with a "Learn with Gemini" button on assignment cards. The change covers the Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals, Standard and Plus editions and is available globally in the Classroom-supported languages where Gemini is also available. To exclude minors, Google points administrators to a manual procedure: the administrator has to create an organisational unit containing only users under 18 and turn off access for that unit alone: "If you would like to disable Gemini in Google Classroom for users who are under 18 years old, you can create an OU with only those users and turn off access for that OU only". In its administrator documentation, Google also states that, with a Gemini Education licence, submitted content is not used to train the models and is not read by human reviewers.

Transparency and open questions: Google does not publish how many institutions or students are involved, nor any breakdown by country, so there is no way to quantify how many pupils will find the assistant switched on. The post does not document whether or how answers differ for the under-18 age brackets: the distinction described is binary, adult or minor. So far there are no public statements from Italian or European authorities on this particular rollout, and no independent data on its educational effects; the data protections cited apply to Gemini Education licences according to Google's documentation and have not been verified by third parties.

The extension lands days after 2 August 2026, when the European AI Act's transparency obligations for systems that interact with people became applicable. Being on by default lowers the barrier to entry, but it moves the decision about who may use the assistant onto the school administrator.
