Gemini and its billion users: logistical firepower more than market power

On 11 August 2026, through its official blog, Google made the Gemini app's new status official: one billion monthly active users. The company called the software "the fastest-growing product in Google's history", a milestone reached in little more than a year, given that in May 2025 it stood at 400 million. The climb was quick, passing through the 950 million declared at the end of July, but it is essential to note that these figures are entirely self-reported by the company and subject to no outside verification. The announcement was relayed on the social network X by CEO Sundar Pichai, although the blog post carries no explicit byline.

The statistics shared paint a picture of multi-purpose use: 63% of users interact with Gemini by voice, more than 150 million images are generated every day, and one interaction in five with Gemini Live uses the live camera or screen sharing. According to the trade press, a company vice president said that the heaviest macOS users send roughly twice as many prompts as on other surfaces, while iOS counts more than 100 million active users. Deep integration with Android allows automation across more than 40 popular apps, and the schoolwork figure shows that 38% of requests include an attachment.

The data Google has released nonetheless comes with several interpretive limits. The company has not clarified what exactly counts as a "monthly active user": no line is drawn between deliberate use and passive activation coming from system preinstallation or a hand-off from Search. The figure also covers only the stand-alone app, leaving out AI Mode in Search, which counts a separate billion of its own. Crucial details are missing — retention, average time spent, the number of paying users — precisely what is needed to understand the real value behind the raw scale.

Comparison with the competition, in particular ChatGPT, which according to TechCrunch had crossed the billion mark in June, is made harder by these asymmetries. And the comparison limps: OpenAI normally reports weekly users, so the monthly billion reported in June 2026 is not a figure that lines up with Google's.
