Amazon Nova: models reaching end of life by September, plus an unconfirmed internal reshuffle
The technical documentation leaves no room for argument: on Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Nova Premier, Nova Canvas, Nova Reel and the first generation of Nova Sonic have been reclassified as "Legacy". According to the official lifecycle page, new customers are locked out and existing ones can lose access after 15 days of inactivity; it is no longer possible to create new fine-tuning jobs or new Provisioned Throughput endpoints. The deadlines differ: 14 September 2026 for Premier and for the first generation of Sonic in the us-east-1, us-east-2 and us-west-2 regions; 30 September for Canvas and Reel, which are also available in the Irish region eu-west-1. There is no automatic migration, which forces developers into urgent manual work if they want to avoid service outages.
Alongside the technical deadlines, details are emerging about a strategic restructuring pieced together by the press. According to Business Insider, picked up by Reuters and The Decoder, Amazon has halted active development on four flagship models — Premier, Omni, Reel and Canvas — keeping them in maintenance only. Compute resources have reportedly been redirected to a new research group, Frontier Model Research, led by researcher Pieter Abbeel, who came to Amazon with the acquisition of Covariant in 2024. The same accounts report the closure of the San Francisco AGI Lab after one of Adept's co-founders left in February 2026. Amazon has not officially confirmed these moves, and Nova Omni's status does not appear in the official lifecycle table.
Faced with talk of a scale-back, an Amazon spokesperson told reporters that artificial intelligence remains an absolute priority and that the line-up is being adjusted to what the market asks for. Second-generation models such as Nova 2 Lite and Nova 2 Sonic remain fully supported, along with the Nova Forge and Nova Act tools. According to press sources, a new foundation model from the Frontier Model Research group is expected at re:Invent in autumn 2026 and may keep the Nova brand; its name, features and date, however, are not confirmed by Amazon.
For a systems engineer the only verifiable truth is the EOL, and the manual code migration that comes with it. Innovation moves on, and leaves the customer to carry the work of moving between versions.
