Olya's profile
What sets it apart
Udio was founded in 2023 by former Google DeepMind researchers and bets everything on sound: a text prompt returns a finished track, vocals included, with a level of mixing that makes it recognisable among music generators. The real difference today, though, is contractual: after deals with Universal, Warner, Merlin and Kobalt it is the only platform of its kind operating inside a licensing perimeter agreed with the majors. The price of that choice is that since 29 October 2025 downloads of audio, video and stems have been disabled: you generate and you listen inside Udio.
Strengths
Audio quality is the strong point: convincing vocals, coherent arrangements, a finish that often needs no touching up. The free plan lets you test it properly, with 10 credits a day plus 100 a month, while Standard at 10 dollars a month gives 2,400 credits and Pro at 30 gives 6,000, amounts doubled as compensation for the download freeze. The deals with the majors clear away the legal uncertainty hanging over most of the sector.
When to use it
It makes sense when the track is meant to live inside Udio: trying out ideas, exploring genres, sketching musical drafts, listening and sharing on the platform. It also suits anyone who wants to see how far music generation has come without risking rights trouble, or who is waiting for the licensed platform announced for 2026, which promises remixes and covers using the voices of participating artists.
When to avoid it
If you need the file, for a video soundtrack, a podcast, a game or a client deliverable, Udio is not for you right now: with no downloads and no stems the track never leaves the platform, and no return date has been confirmed. In that case look at generators that hand you the audio, or at licensed music libraries. Watch the credits too: they do not roll over from month to month, so a subscription used only now and then is money thrown away.
