- What sets it apart
- Midjourney is still a tool built around a single obsession: aesthetic output. It doesn't chase the versatility of general-purpose generators but a recognizable "look" — light, texture, composition — that feels more polished out of the box. Version 7 added Omni Reference to keep a character or style consistent across images, which used to be its weak spot.
- Strengths
- Default visual quality is high even without elaborate prompts, lowering the barrier for anyone who isn't a prompt engineer. Every plan includes commercial usage rights, and from the Standard plan up you get Relax Mode with unlimited but slower generations. Since 2025 there's also the V1 model to animate a still into five-second clips.
- When to use it
- It shines when the goal is visual impact — concept art, moodboards, editorial illustration, covers, style exploration — and you don't need pixel-level control. It's great for iterating fast across many variations and finding an aesthetic direction. The $10-a-month Basic plan is enough to try it properly.
- When to avoid it
- If you need readable text inside the image, precise diagrams, or fine technical control, other tools do it better. Privacy costs extra: Stealth Mode, which makes your generations private, is only on the Pro and Mega plans. And if you want to run locally, for free, or via an open API, a closed subscription service like Midjourney isn't the way.
