DeepSeek
Extreme efficiency and advanced reasoning at a low cost.
Olya's profile
- What sets it apart
- DeepSeek comes from a Chinese lab that turned efficiency into a philosophy: a Mixture-of-Experts architecture and weights it often releases openly, which keeps prices at a fraction of its rivals'. The V4 generation, in Flash and Pro flavours, brings a one-million-token context window and a reasoning mode you switch on when you need it. Its API speaks both the OpenAI and the Anthropic dialects, so you plug it in without rewriting your code.
- Strengths
- The real argument is value for money: reasoning over maths, logic and code at prices that make otherwise prohibitive volumes sustainable. The web chat and mobile app are free, with no paid tiers, and the API throws in a token allowance on sign-up. The million-token context lets you feed it long documents without chopping them up.
- When to use it
- It pays off when you need high-volume reasoning and code generation and the budget matters more than the brand: prototypes, automated pipelines, analysis of large amounts of text. It's also a solid pick if you want to keep the weights in-house and run it on your own infrastructure.
- When to avoid it
- Steer clear for sensitive or regulated data: the policy states storage in China, subject to local law, and its use has already been restricted in the public sector of several countries, Italy among them. It lacks persistent memory and a voice mode, and on politically delicate topics the censorship shows; for those cases a Western model is the safer bet.
